WNBA availability
The latest word on every player whose availability came up in a press conference in the last three weeks.
Gabby Williams' late limp in Game 1 didn't hold her back in Game 2, Natalie Nakase said after the Valkyries' loss to Atlanta: "Oh, no. She was aggressive. Yeah, she was fine." Nakase said Williams just missed: "I thought her looks were the same as usual."
Tiffany Hayes is available for Game 2 after the hit she took in Game 1. "Everyone's good to go," Natalie Nakase said before the game, with 12 of 14 Valkyries available. Hayes nearly retired before joining her, Nakase said, and offered to come off the bench when they first met.
Atlanta's Allisha Gray (hand) is a game-time decision. Karl Smesko: "Everything's trending in the right direction, but when the starters are announced at 30 minutes, we'll know for sure." No word on a minutes limit. He called it go or no-go, the doctors' call.
Kiah Stokes has missed the last few days of Golden State Valkyries practice and looked congested. Natalie Nakase framed it as rest after Stokes spent the last series guarding the MVP: "I think guarding the MVP is pretty tough. And so, yeah, she's just resting."
No timeline on Allisha Gray, so Atlanta leans on rookie Isobel Borlase, 21. "I don't think we win either of the last 2 games without the production we got from Izzy," Karl Smesko said; he wants it through the Finals. Angel Reese also credited DeWanna Bonner.
Stephanie Talbot returned for the Las Vegas Aces in a Game 2 loss to Golden State and leaned on how she closed the year: "I finished the regular season with some momentum and some confidence, and I just tried to bring that into the game."
Jewell Loyd went down mid-game in the Aces' loss. Becky Hammon hadn't spoken to her and gave no status: "I don't know exactly what happened other than some lower leg." With injuries piling up, she said, it's "next woman up."
Breanna Stewart played 40 minutes again, and New York Liberty coach Chris DeMarco would not commit to a plan for her workload: "it's just going to depend on the rest days in between... we're just going to continue to monitor it."
Tyasha Harris, a pending free agent, is coming off surgery, and Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White gave no timeline for her recovery: "I don't have a status update. She had successful surgery."
Dallas was "a little depleted from injuries," Jose Fernandez said, citing Alanna Smith, "our best interior defender," and a first-round pick he didn't name: "also our best perimeter defender, shooter." His point: injuries took his best defender inside and out.
Stephanie Talbot missed the Aces' game, and Becky Hammon doesn't know her status yet: "I'm hoping she should be good for this next series." Until then the focus is "rest and getting healthy." Dana Evans has been out nearly all year; Mai Yamamoto was signed as insurance.
Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said "everybody could see Napheesa Collier wasn't Napheesa Collier" after she returned from double ankle surgery without time with her team. Of Dorka Juhasz, hurt in April just before joining: "she just never found her footing with us."
